Emi's Birth Story

Growing up in our house, Mom would always tell us our birth story (a very abbreviated version) when she put us to bed on our birthday. It was something I always looked forward to, and so I got to continue on the tradition with Emi tonight.

I figured I might as well put her story here too.

September 15th (On her due date!)

1:20-1:30ish My water broke. Marty and I were just sleeping, and then all the sudden I felt a release down there. I put my hand to feel it and water was gushing out continually. I turned to Marty and said “I think my water just broke.” I went into the bathroom and yep, it had broke. I called the doctor and they said to head to the hospital. We drove to the hospital (10-15ish minutes away, but even shorter when it’s in the middle of the night) and went in through the emergency room section of the hospital. Seriously anticlimactic. Haha. I was super excited about seeing the emergency room, but instead it was just some security people we passed who told us to go up to the birth floor (#3). We went there and they had to verify that my water had actually broken (I was sure of it because I was still gushing out fluid). However, they put us in this room and asked a bunch of questions, and then someone came in and used these clamp thingies to make sure my water had actually broken. Surprise surprise, it had. They moved us into a delivery room and from there it’s kind of just a blur to be honest. I started getting contractions and they started getting more and more strong and I remember when I was on the birth ball Marty’s like “You know you want to get the epidural anyway so why don’t you just get it.” And then I remembered how Steph said her body had relaxed more once she had the epidural too, so I decided to get it. This was around 7:30 am. This guy, Ralph, came in and gave me the epidural. He was super chill. The IV honestly hurt worse than the epidural. After I was given the epidural my body got so so so itchy. Marty read me “The Seams 2” to help get my mind off the itchiness. Then we just waited and hung out. I used the peanut ball (love that thing) and listened to Enya and Marty laid on the couch bed thingy. I progressed pretty fast and by 2 pmish I was ready to push. The nurse said that was very fast for a first birth. Marty held one leg, the nurse Andrea held the other leg and I began pushing. The doctor recommend I use a mirror when I was close to having Emi out but I was hesitant. However, I caved and use the mirror and it was so cool to see Emi’s head as I was pushing. I still could definitely feel the contractions (even with an epidural) and had the urge to push. Then our little Emi was born at 3:30 pm. They placed her on my chest, and I remember a couple tears stream down my face and feeling immense love for this baby. I couldn’t even believe it. After she was on my chest for a while (I can’t remember if I fed her then or not), they took her to the side of our room and weighed her and did some testing. Then, if I’m remembering right they handed her to Marty and he held our little angel. It was honestly just what I wanted. Marty and me and our little one. It was perfect.
